Sober only makes 4th place in virus chart

London, UK (1st December 2005) – SoftScan, Scandinavia’s leading supplier in the hosted antivirus and spam filter market, reports that despite wide spread news coverage of sober being the biggest outbreak of the year that netsky, phishing and mytob still remain the top 3 virus groups stopped by SoftScan’s scanners in the last 30 days.

Top 5 email groups for November are as follows:
Netsky: 28.27%
Phishing: 27.59%
Mytob: 18.52%
Sober: 11.22%
Bagle: 5.67%

Bo Engelbrechtsen, corporate communications manager of SoftScan comments, “Although the sober outbreaks were significant, they in no way matched the 30,000 per hour sober laden email messages that SoftScan stopped earlier this year during the sober.p out break. Indeed, according to SoftScan’s statistics, at one point during the recent outbreak email messages infected with bagle spiked far higher than sober.”

Number of viruses per hour – Danish time, GMT -1hr
Date/Time sober bagle mytob

Total number over this period sober = 69746; bagle = 37974; mytob = 22400

The amount of spam detected by SoftScan was up at 84.37% of all email messages scanned. This is the highest it has been since June, when it was 88.01%. SoftScan anticipate that just as it has done so in previous years, the percentage may go higher still in the lead up to Christmas as spammers tempt users with the promises of cheaper goods.

“Users need to remember that spam is bad news,” adds Bo Engelbrechtsen. “The goods sold are usually counterfeit or stolen, the email itself may just be encouraging you to down load a trojan and your credit card details might be used illegally. People that respond to spam only help to fuel an industry that positively encourages fraudulent behaviour. The most sensible thing anyone can do to a spam email is delete it.”
