Are you online savvy? Wednesday 9 August 2006 PDF Print As more and more households in the UK opt for Broadband services, a yougov survey commissioned by Uswitch.com and published by the BBC yesterday, revealed that Britons spend an average of 50 days a year online. The survey further indicated that a majority of the over 15,000 people surveyed used their broadband connection to shop online (87%) as well as do their day-to-day banking via the web (78%). This confirms that Broadband is taking off in the UK. However, this access comes with risks. As more people go online, they need to be aware of these risks. Trend Micro regularly scans PCs across Britain with its HouseCall Service and revealed that 3% of home computers scanned last month, had one of the most malicious of all malware – keylogging, a type of spyware which steals passwords and secretly reports information on these passwords back to whoever planted the loggers. This crimeware, frequently also called spy-phishing, is used to steal users’ identity and banking information. While the increase in broadband usage is good news as more Britons are becoming internet savvy, it is important that they need access to the best information available on how to protect themselves and their families from the associated risks. “Users should ensure they have an up-to-date anti virus programme running. It could not only be their computers at risks but also their wallets. With the increase of spy- and crimeware, users need to be on their guard and keep their systems updated against vulnerabilities at all times”, comments David Sancho from Trend Labs at Trend Micro.
