Riverbed Selected for Speed of Deployment and Ease of Integration Into Company’s Cisco Network

April 10, 2007 – Riverbed Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: RVBD), the performance leader in wide-area data services (WDS), announced today that Schaller Anderson, Incorporated, has purchased and deployed Riverbed’s Steelhead® appliances at its remote sites across the United States to improve the performance of centralised applications.

Schaller Anderson administers physical and behavioural health care for Medicaid, Medicare, commercial, and employer self-funded plans. Schaller Anderson’s affiliated companies provide services in nine states—Arizona, California, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Missouri, New Hampshire Tennessee and Texas—and serve more than 1.3 million people, managing over $3.2 billion in health care benefits. Schaller Anderson has more than 1,800 employees, and has been named one of the fastest growing private companies in the U.S.

The company has grown 337% over the last five years. This explosive growth has been accompanied by an expansion of offices and the number of distributed employees. At the same time, Schaller Anderson has long had centralised IT infrastructure. Employees located in field offices access centralised servers using a variety of applications, including Microsoft SQL-based health care applications, Web applications, and Microsoft Exchange.

Even though Schaller Anderson has always purchased and deployed state-of–the-art network infrastructure and employed top notch IT professionals, the number of applications deployed (many, not optimised to run over a WAN) and the number of remote users and data needs grew and that growth needed to be addressed. In addition, the IT staff is charged with ensuring business continuity at Schaller Anderson. As part of this effort, the staff replicates its data from its central site to a disaster recovery site every 15 minutes. As the company grew, the volume of data grew as well and IT solutions were needed to accommodate that growth.

Schaller Anderson considered adding bandwidth to overcome these issues, but quickly realised that this approach would not create enough performance capacity. Schaller Anderson’s IT staff then began evaluating WDS vendors and chose Riverbed®.

“Riverbed delivered the performance we needed for our applications and they were the easiest to install and integrate into our Cisco network,” said Terry Newman, director of information services at Schaller Anderson

Schaller Anderson has deployed eight Steelhead appliances to date at sites in California, Maryland, Delaware and Arizona, and plans to deploy additional Steelhead appliances in the coming months at sites in Texas, Tempe, Arizona and Missouri. The company has purchased 11 Steelheads thus far.

“File transfers that once took 15 minutes are now down to two minutes on the first pass and instantaneous after that,” continued Newman.

In addition, prior to the installation of the Steelhead appliances network links were over 90% utilized. The links are now at 30%, allowing Schaller Anderson to avoid a planned network upgrade. According to Newman, the Steelhead appliances have paid for themselves in six months or less based on bandwidth savings alone. The Steelhead appliances also allow the Schaller Anderson IT staff to meet their business continuity goals.

“The Steelhead appliances are now part of our core set-up and infrastructure,” said Newman. “The combination of LAN-like application performance at our remote sites and the ability to ensure continuous operations is highly effective.”

About Riverbed’s Steelhead Appliances

Riverbed’s WDS solutions enable organisations with more than one office to overcome a host of severe problems, including poor application performance and insufficient bandwidth at remote sites.
