SMT Network Solutions has made the decision to move its ‘anti-virus’ client base – some 200 businesses - over to BitDefender, following a major review of the desktop solution supplied to support its Efinity servers.

Renowned for its high level of security protection, the Efinity server is a general purpose workhorse, providing a wide range of core functionality to support enterprise computing and tele-communications infrastructure.

Typical server applications include use as gateways to secure sites, in conjunction with data back-up facilities. The Efinity server offers two layers of protection against malware. An in-house developed anti-virus system, claimed to be as good as anything currently on the market; backed up by a well known ‘brand’ solution, for additional reassurance.

Commenting on the decision to switch brands, Chris Ball, managing director of SMT Network Solutions, stressed the need for on-going development, “keeping us ahead in the battle against attack and to defend the end user from this very annoying and potentially costly problem.”

“Linux support had become an issue with our previous vendor and although our client base represents over 2,000 end users, we were unable to negotiate a satisfactory license deal for continuing this arrangement.

“Our associate company in Italy has been with BitDefender for quite a long time. So from a recommendation we carried out an evaluation in comparison with a number of different anti-virus solutions; and BitDefender came out on top.

“Key deciding factors for BitDefender were its ease of use, performance and reliability. Moreover we liked the Linux solution and this underlines our need to work with a partner who would provide on-going support and development.”

Growing threat

Spamming activity continues to grow as the villains become more creative in their quest for our time and money. On a single day for example SMT received 4,500 inbound e-mails of which 88 per cent (3960) were identified as spam. Out of this catch 6 per cent contained viruses – a sharp increase over the previous month’s average of 0.1 per cent viruses per day.
