New suite from encryption software leader Steganos enables encrypted internet access, encryption of stored data and Outlook, and secure destruction of obsolete data

KESTON, UK, 25th April 2007 - Steganos, European leader in security and privacy software for consumers and SMEs, has launched a suite of software to help travelling computer users to protect their data from unauthorised access, loss or theft. Steganos Secure Traveler includes Steganos Secure VPN, Steganos Safe, Steganos Portable Safe, Steganos Shredder, Steganos Password Manager and Steganos AntiTheft.

A February 2007 Steganos survey found that 74% of those who use a computer outside of work also travel with it, dramatically increasing the risk of loss or theft.

A separate Steganos survey found that 64% of people would be more worried about someone else having access to all their personal data than they would about the cost of the hardware if their computer was lost or stolen. Steganos Secure Traveler provides a complete suite to ensure that data is encrypted wherever it is stored and even as it is sent over the internet.

Steganos Secure VPN: for secure surfing using hotspots and wireless LANs

Steganos Secure VPN enables users to create an encrypted tunnel to the internet, eliminating the possibility for ISPs, intermediaries in the connection, hackers or wi-fi hotspot operators to eavesdrop on data traffic. All data passing through the tunnel is encrypted using a 128bit SSL connection, including emails and email passwords, business data, instant messenger chats, auction bids, blogs and ecommerce transactions.

All data is passed through one of the many Steganos servers, which means that the user can also surf anonymously. The only IP address that website operators can see is that of the Steganos server.

Users have a traffic allowance of 10GB per month, and the web interface enables users to see how much of their allowance they have consumed and how much is still available.

Steganos Safe: strong encryption to protect data

Using Steganos Safe, users can create as many encrypted drives as they need, each one with a capacity of up to 256GB. The safes can be opened and used through Windows applications, but when locked, they disappear from Windows Explorer. Safes can be sorted by creation date, name, size or by a user-defined colour coding. Each safe can be quickly opened and locked from within any application using keyboard shortcuts.

The Outlook Safe password-protects all emails, calendar entries, task lists and contact details. Various PST files, which store the complete Outlook content including the archive, can be stored securely in the Safe. Without the password, Outlook cannot be started, ensuring sensitive Outlook data remains private even if the PC is lost or stolen.

As well as traditional text password entry, Steganos PicPass enables users to enter a secret sequence of pictures to access data. A mix of password entry and PicPass provides enhanced protection against mouseclick recorders.

Secure drives can also be opened using a USB stick, storage card, ActiveSync-compatible telephone, digital camera or Apple iPod. When the device is connected, the Safes are automatically opened. Using a mobile phone, the data can be unlocked wirelessly. If the user moves away from the computer, the data is automatically encrypted again.

Steganos Portable Safe: encryption for data on the move

Data on CDs, DVDs, storage cards, USB sticks, DVD-DLs and Apple iPods can be encrypted using Steganos Portable Safe. New data can be added to Safes on rewriteable media from any computer. As soon as the storage medium is removed, the data is encrypted. To use Portable Safes on a specific computer, administration rights are required for the installation of the decryption program the first time only.

Steganos Safe and Steganos Portable Safe use the most advanced encryption algorithm in the world, AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) with 256 bit keys. AES protects in real time and has never been cracked.

Steganos Shredder: definitive data destruction also for external storage devices

Steganos Shredder irrevocably destroys files and any file remains in free disk space. It enables three methods to be used for destroying data: a simple overwriting, the US Department of Defense DoD5220.22-M/NISPOM 8-306 method, or the Gutmann Method using 35 rounds of overwriting. Steganos Shredder’s deep cleaner removes remains of files that were previously deleted using traditional methods and which could otherwise be reconstituted. Data on USB sticks and external drives and devices can also be shredded, including deep cleaning of free space.

Steganos Password Manager: simplifying security management

Steganos Password Manager organises passwords in an encrypted list, which only a single password is needed to open. Access data for websites, such as usernames and passwords, can be automatically entered, including when using Firefox. Using the mobile Password Manager for Pocket PCs, passwords and PINs are encrypted but available to the legitimate user at any time. The Password Manager for Pocket PCs synchronises with the PC easily. Steganos Password Manager can also help users to create highly secure passwords and warns users about insecure passwords.

Steganos AntiTheft: assisting with the recovery of stolen computers

Steganos AntiTheft can help to recover stolen computers. When the program is first activated, the computer receives an ID and regularly sends a signal to the Steganos AntiTheft server. Should a laptop be lost or stolen, the owner can register the ID of the computer at the Steganos Website and can see the IP address of where the computer was used in the last 30 days. Using this information, it could be possible for the police to trace the owner of the IP addresses used and so recover the hardware.

Steganos Secure Traveler is available to download from now.
