RESULTS OF CELEBRITY SURVEY FOR DEAF AWARENESS WEEK Tuesday 8 May 2007 PDF Print Survey reveals the celebrity voices we love and hate to hear Disgraced reality TV star Jade Goody has been named as the celebrity with the worst sounding voice according to a new poll. The Bermondsey Bigmouth’s not so dulcet tones have got her into hot water recently and now the British public have slammed her voice for being loud and irritating. And many Brits believe Wayne Rooney should let his feet do the talking, polling the Manchester United striker in second place. He was closely followed by star of the current reality show Deadline, Janet Street Porter. Hearing aid retailer the Hearing Company conducted the survey of 4,000 Brits to discover the celebrity voices we love and hate to hear*. The results are being issued to coincide with Deaf Awareness Week, which runs until 13 May and is an annual drive to raise awareness of deaf and hard of hearing issues and encourage people to take their aural health more seriously. Celebrity voices we love to hear include Arsenal captain Thierry Henry, who was voted number one. The 29 year old’s sexy French accent has secured him millions in advertising deals and made him the Premiership’s eighth richest player. Bond actor Sean Connery was runner-up for favourite voices, thanks to his deep Scottish twang. The public also considered Ab-Fab star Joanna Lumley’s voice to be easy on the ear, voting her into third place. Andrea Callaway, marketing director at the Hearing Company, said: “This poll shows how a celebrity sounds significantly influences their popularity with the public. “Hearing is one of our most vital senses – but it’s also amongst the most neglected. “Our poll revealed a staggering 69 per cent of British adults have never had a hearing test, compared to a mere eight per cent who have never checked their eyesight. We advise people of all ages to have their hearing checked every two years.” Almost nine million people in the UK suffer from some degree of hearing loss but only around two million do something about it by fitting a hearing aid. As a nation we have an outdated stigma associated with hearing loss. Almost a quarter of those surveyed said they wouldn’t wear a hearing aid and two thirds said that was due to vanity. The Hearing Company has nine branches throughout the UK and operates from a further 400 associated outlets nationwide and all branches of Scrivens Opticians.
