Powerful Embedded Database Enables Quantel’s Newsroom Systems to Manage the Massive Move from Tape to Digital Video

London -- May 15, 2007 – MySQL AB, developer of the world's most popular open source database, today announced that Quantel, a UK-based company behind one of the world's most popular server-based newsroom systems, has selected the MySQL database server as a critical component in its ‘Enterprise sQ’ product line.

In the highly-competitive broadcasting industry, improving time-to-air for important news enhances prestige as well as the financial bottom line. Quite simply, being seen as a primary source for breaking news attracts more viewers, which attract more advertisers. Broadcasters have increasingly become more efficient by moving from tape to disk-based production systems. But in doing so, huge challenges arise when managing the massive amounts of data generated by video. Quantel has helped broadcasters such as ESPN eliminate this problem by introducing ISA, an Integrated Server Architecture and FrameMagic™ -- a patented system to keep track of video frame-by-frame. These technologies allow multiple people to work on the same piece of source video without requiring multiple physical copies.

After evaluating a number of database products while developing these new products, the Quantel team decided to select MySQL, and to purchase an OEM license that enabled them to embed and distribute the popular database with their own technology.

“Our primary criteria for selecting MySQL were its high performance, low complexity, and data replication capabilities. Above-all, the database needed to have seamless, ‘zero-touch’ administration for our broadcaster customers,” said Alec Cawley, Quantel’s Senior Software Architect. ”We wanted to be able to embed the database as we would any system component -- and MySQL AB’s flexible, cost-effective commercial licensing model made this possible.”

Cawley has been particularly impressed with MySQL’s professional technical support team.

“I am extremely pleased with the support we have received from MySQL AB. We always get a quick response from someone who knows what they are talking about. It’s the best service I’ve experienced from any software company.”
