With people living longer and healthier lives, there is an increasing need to find viable housing solutions for the elderly, many of whom are finding it harder to finance their retirement. Assured Tenancy retirement rentals offer a solution, avoiding the hassle and costs associated with owning a property in later life and enabling people to rent bespoke accommodation on a contract that is controlled by the tenant, not the landlord. The value of Assured Tenancy contracts was outlined by Baroness Sally Greengross, on Friday. The crossbench member of the House of Lords and ex director of Age Concern spoke at the opening of Magnolia Grange, a new development in Worle, Weston-super-Mare, offering superior retirement accommodation for rent. The development was launched by Girlings, in response to increasing demand for retirement rentals on Assured Tenancies.

Baroness Greengross commented:

“We are very fortunate to be approaching a longevity revolution. But people should be able to enjoy their lives without having to worry about owning a property, or, if they are renting, without the uncertainty that they might have to move if the landlord’s circumstances change. I am delighted with the scheme that Girlings offers, as it provides a much-needed solution for the many people who currently find themselves in this situation.”

An increasing number of people are realising the benefits of renting in retirement, and Girlings, which rents to thousands of people, experienced a 40% increase in rentals last year.

At first, Mrs Lloyd rented a regular property, but she was worried about the uncertainty of a shorthold tenancy rental contract. She wanted something more secure and decided to rent through Girlings.
