Leading scientific research and development company uses Spotfire to support scientific analysis and plans to extend its use for enterprise BI

Somerville, Mass. – May 21, 2007 ─ Spotfire, Inc. (, the Information Insight CompanySM, today announced that Avantium, a leading high-throughput research and development company servicing the chemical and life science sectors, is using its software to help with its analysis of chemical compounds and processes. Avantium also plans to evaluate the use of Spotfire’s enterprise analytics platform to help provide staff in its key business areas, such as finance and sales, with desktop Business Intelligence (BI) to help them add more value to the business as it continues to grow in the market.

“Avantium has been using Spotfire to help with high throughput analysis for our Catalysis and Crystallization research business” said Erik Bergman, Team Leader of ICT at Avantium. “The Spotfire solution enables our teams to share live analysis of data whilst tests are still taking place. This has helped ensure that our services are highly efficient and effective for our clients and internal testing procedures.”

Spotfire’s interactive, visual approach to data analysis acts as a self-service environment for business users seeking to quickly discover new insights and address emerging threats. These business users can, in turn, transform their enterprise into ‘analytically savvy’ organizations by broadcasting their path-to-insight to colleagues.

Avantium will evaluate how this same technology can be used in helping its main business processes to run more effectively and efficiently. “With the availability of Spotfire’s DXP product, which extends the use of its technology for BI within the enterprise, we will explore ways that this can help us with our enterprise management and decision making processes in addition to our scientific research,” said Bergman. “With this in mind, we are extending our use of Spotfire, through its DXP solution, to enhance the reporting and analysis capabilities of our existing research and analysis functions. We then plan to extend this to provide a BI platform for our key business processes such as finance and sales.”

Some of the DXP capabilities that Avantium is keen to implement include its DXP Enterprise Player client, which will allow the actual analytical process and data generated to be shared internally and with clients so that the conclusions and findings of research can be clearly understood and communicated. This will also be very useful when it is applied to enterprise users as a desktop tool, which, with the use of the DXP’s thin client model and dedicated enterprise server, means that it can rolled-out as a BI tool to whole departments easily and effectively.

“Spotfire has enabled us to provide our customers with a great service and we are pleased that we can continue to work with them to extend the level of this capability. The ability of Spotfire DXP to also help the running of our business processes as an enterprise BI tool is an attractive option and we look forward to working with them to see how this can help our business,” concluded Berman.

Tom van Aken, CEO of Avantium said: “As part of Avantium’s strategy to be a leading high-throughput technology provider to the pharmaceutical, oil and chemical industries, we are keen to collaborate with Spotfire. Their innovative software solutions have played an important role for our business by data visualization of the large data streams that are continuously generated by our technology platforms. We look forward to broaden the scope of our collaboration.”

“Avantium is a dynamic and exciting company that is expanding the boundaries of technology application and development within its sector,” Christopher Ahlberg, CEO of Spotfire. “As a customer that is looking to transition its use of Spotfire from the scientific research arena to include enterprise BI, they reflect the growth and development of our solutions in the market and the way that business intelligence tools are now being used on a desktop level by knowledge workers to help increase business efficiency and competitiveness.”
