Farmer's money-saving idea boosts Macmillan Cancer Appeal Thursday 24 May 2007 PDF Print Farmer Mike Sherwood will never forget the care given to his mother by Macmillan nurses after she had been diagnosed with severe cancer. Like thousands of others, he wanted to say "thank you" to them for their unstinting work and support. Mike has been cutting costs this winter by making his own mineral blocks for his cattle, which seem to thrive on the recipe he has devised. The cost is a fraction of what he was paying the local farm supply company for ready made mineral licks, and he knows that plenty of livestock farmers will be interested in making the same savings as he has enjoyed. Mike then had a plan - to raise funds for Macmillan by selling his recipe to other farmers. The point of contact was through Practical Farm Ideas, a publication which, for the past 16 years, has been providing farmers with cost cutting ideas and handy practical tips. Practical Farm Ideas has featured previous ideas of Mike's, and took no persuading to get involved - "I thought it was a brilliant way to help both my farmer-readers and the charity of which I have heard so much", says editor Mike Donovan. The offer is published in the current issue - and farmers are asked to send a £5 donation to Practical Farm Ideas for Macmillan Cancer Support and in return receive a Mike's Mineral Recipe together with the 'thank-you' letter from Macmillan. "The response has been superb," says Joy Waters from the charity's Swansea office which is doing the administration of the offer. Practical Farm Ideas editor adds: "I have been doing this magazine for 16 years and really can say that farmers are the salt of the earth. They are a fantastic group of people to work with, and I'm frankly not too surprised at the wonderful response. Though the request was for a fiver, we have received cheques for £20 and more from readers."
