Survey Finds Staff Productivity Suffers as Users at Remote Sites Wait for File Downloads

LONDON – 13 JUNE 2007 - A new survey by Riverbed Technology, Inc., the performance leader in wide-area data services (WDS), shows that one in four staff at remote sites does nothing whilst waiting for files to download across the wide area network (WAN) - directly impacting productivity. Favourite activities used to fill the waiting void include; ‘humming’, ‘making a cuppa’ and ‘having a gossip’.

Riverbed® commissioned the survey of 130 UK network and IT managers, entitled, ‘WAN Challenges for Business’, to discover the problems faced by individuals when they use their company’s WAN, and to see what level of performance improvement was required to enable staff to carry out their jobs with the same efficiency as those at headquarters.

Key findings from the survey include:

Faster, faster, faster - 50% of respondents felt that application performance at remote sites needed to be ten times faster, while over a third felt it should be 20 – 50 times faster.

Consolidation roadblock – 19% of respondents saw the current speed of the WAN preventing IT consolidation of data centres, while 18% did not have enough bandwidth capacity to run applications.

Email is key – A quarter of staff saw email as the most important business application running across the WAN, followed by voice and video over IP.

Mark Lewis, Riverbed’s EMEA marketing director, comments on the findings, “With one in four remotely located employees wasting time waiting for files to download, the application acceleration delivered by wide-area data services (WDS) is crucial. Employees are frustrated and productivity is suffering. Riverbed’s WDS solutions can allow organisations with distributed staffs to give remote employees virtually the same application performance as those at headquarters.”

Clive Longbottom, service director at Quocirca, a leading primary research and analysis company, suggests, “Many users find ‘everyday’ WAN-based applications too slow, and will often find other ways to do their job. WAN acceleration can mean the difference between centralised applications driving remote worker productivity over the WAN or staff creating their own processes in each location to get round the problem.”

David Galton-Fenzi, group sales director at Riverbed distributor Zycko, said, “The results of this investigation highlight that WANs are struggling to cope with the pace of modern business and that severe operational pain-points are created as a result.”

“Riverbed’s solution allows users to become more productive by enabling vital business functions and applications to operate at lightening speed across a WAN,” added Galton-Fenzi.

Lewis continues, “As the survey shows, poor application performance across the WAN is impacting business productivity. In addition to time wasted as employees wait for file downloads, organisations are delaying initiatives such as IT consolidation that would improve security, reduce costs and improve operational efficiency. WDS solutions allow organisations to improve remote application performance by five to fifty times and sometimes up to 100 times, improving user satisfaction and productivity and allowing organisations to advance projects such as IT consolidation that otherwise were stalled or delayed.”

About Riverbed’s Steelhead Appliances
Riverbed’s WDS solutions enable organisations with more than one office to overcome a host of severe problems, including poor application performance and insufficient bandwidth at remote sites. By speeding the performance of applications between distributed sites by five to 50 times and in some cases up to 100 times between enterprise datacenters and remote offices, Riverbed’s award-winning Steelhead WDS appliances enable companies to consolidate IT, improve backup and replication processes to ensure data integrity, and improve staff productivity and collaboration. Steelhead appliances have been deployed in organisations ranging from the world’s largest corporations with offices around the globe to small companies with a couple of sites that are just miles apart.
