Key Facts:

- Patented cognometric authentication software
- Cannot be written down, lost, stolen or forgotten
- Authenticates the user rather than the PIN, password or smart card
- Naturally enhances or replaces existing systems

ACAL ATM Parts has been authorised as a certified reseller for Passfaces Web Access and Passfaces for Windows, patented authentication software which increases data security in a wide range of applications including high-risk sectors such as banking and finance.

Passfaces is a bidirectional authentication system based on cognometrics, which uses the brain's innate ability to recognise and recall faces. It offers an intuitive and secure log-on by assigning users with a set of between 3 and 7 faces which act as their secret authentication code. To gain system access, the user must correctly identify each of their assigned faces from successive sets of nine faces, thus authenticating both the system and the user.

Unlike PINs and passwords or other graphical authentication systems, which mix images of different objects, Passfaces’ authentication code is impossible to write down and yet provides easy recall. As Passfaces is based on the user’s ability to recall faces, it authenticates the user rather than the password, PIN or smart card, all of which can be lost, forgotten or stolen. This supports secure authentication even when users remotely access the system and has eliminated the need for password resets at customer installations.

Passfaces can supplement or replace existing authentication systems to provide enhanced security at a cost which is significantly less than alternative technologies. Benefiting from no client hardware or software implementing Passfaces Web Access is straight forward with complete developer kits available in versions optimised for Windows, Java and Java/SDK. The kits include a Software Developers Kit (SDK) with server-side Java-class package, Passfaces library of faces, and the client/user interface as well as end-user licenses based on the number of active online users. The client and help sections of Passfaces are easily customised to include logos as well as the look and feel of the customer website.

An out-of-the-box version, Passfaces Web Access for Windows, provides an immediate security upgrade for Windows-based networks such as intranets, extranets and enterprise web servers.

Shaun Froome, Managing Director of ACAL’s ATM Parts, explained “At a time when the UK Payments Association, APACS, have announced an annual increase of 44% in on-line banking fraud, our partnership with Passfaces provides our security division with an invaluable tool to help customers in their battle to protect consumers against on-line fraud.”

Paul Barrett, CEO, Passfaces added, “By partnering with ACAL ATM Parts, we are giving customers the advantage of working with a specialist, technical distributor who fully understands every aspect of implementing security for ATM networks and online transactions.”
