Software solutions house Hassnet has taken up the challenge of providing a seamless one-stop shop for lawyers battling with complex criminal and fraud cases.

In many of today’s most complicated cases, the biggest challenge is the sheer volume of paperwork involved, according to Hassnet managing director Jacintha Hodgson.

She said: “While there have been companies that would scan documents, one of the most tedious and time consuming tasks in terms of case preparation, for example in criminal cases, has been sorting through the huge pile of evidence and documents from the prosecuting body.

“And time spent on sorting paper is time that could be spent on case analysis.”

From its central UK base near Studley in Warwickshire, Hassnet is helping an increasing number of solicitors and barristers to handle complex cases swiftly and more efficiently.

The Hassnet team take the papers for a case and scan them to build a searchable database within CaseMap – a dedicated software solution specifically designed and refined with complex cases in mind.

Hassnet’s CaseMap criminal evidence solution combines the award-winning CaseSoft software with sophisticated document management and database expertise backed up with bespoke training and on-site support.

Another CaseSoft product, TimeMap, is used in conjunction with CaseMap to create polished graphics to illustrate points for clients, the team or experts.

Jacintha Hodgson said: “For those who have not worked with CaseMap or TimeMap before, Hassnet will have you working on a real case in as little as a day, and then stay at the end of the phone to offer advice and assistance as required.

“Essentially CaseMap offers both arms of the profession a tool to collate their case knowledge. It ensures that lawyers and barristers have all the facts at their fingertips so the legal team’s energy is directed at case analysis, not trawling through paper files.”

The effectiveness of the solution is such that many of today’s most successful law firms are working with Hassnet and using Hassnet’s CaseMap Legal Solution. These include leading members of the Specialist Fraud Panel and international firms based in the UK.

The Hassnet service (comprising of scanning, CaseMap, database preparation, training and support) is well understood by the Legal Services Commission’s Complex Crime Unit as an effective device to speed up the analysis of evidence in VHCCs.

The CaseMap Criminal Evidence Solution is Hassnet’s latest service for legal professionals and has developed from its expertise in providing case management solutions for the legal profession throughout the UK.

CaseMap is widely used in the USA by leading US law firms and institutions such as the US Department of Defence and FBI. CaseMap is now being rolled out in the UK by parent company CaseSoft (owned by Lexis Nexis) and early adopters include many of the leading members of the Specialist Fraud Panel.

Jacintha Hodgson added: “As well as criminal lawyers, others who would find CaseMap useful are investigators, forensic accountants, divorce lawyers, public sector planners. In fact anyone who has a need to organise, extract key data and analyse large amounts of documentation in a searchable electronic database can find CaseMap a useful tool.”

Editors’ Notes:

Hassnet has been specialising in providing innovative software solutions to law firms since its inception in 2004. Having come across Case Map’s software, Hassnet realised the benefits it could give to firms dealing with paper heavy and detail rich cases such as fraud, where the amount of paperwork could be massive. However some firms that had bought the software without supporting services have found it difficult to build the initial case database.

So it is Hassnet that bridges the gap for people who want to plug into the benefits that the award winning CaseMap software can bring. Hassnet takes all the papers for a case and produces electronic copies for the database. Using that information it will populate the CaseMap document directory and build links to CaseMap files so there is a searchable electronic database at the solicitor’s fingertips.

Hassnet will also introduce TimeMap to law firms so it can be used to create timeline graphs which can be essential to seeing the reality of a case.

Finally Hassnet will also train those who will be using CaseMap and provide ongoing support so its features are thoroughly exploited.

Hassnet is an accredited CPD training provider for both the Bar Council and The Law Society.
