Half of the women questioned for a bikini survey conducted by Del Monte Smoothie Lollies admitted that they would usually plan to spend over two months preparing for their first bikini outing of the year! But the bad weather has delayed things somewhat!

The two months of prep mostly consisted of dieting but surprisingly it was the more mature woman aged 45-54 who was most likely to hop on the sunbed with 1 in 5 admitting to doing so before donning their two piece.

And because summer so far has been more about wellies and comfort dinners than shorts and salads, most women have not spent two months relentlessly preparing - which is why 80 per cent have simply decided that they will not feel confident enough to wear a bikini when the sun finally does come out.

The survey was conducted by Del Monte Smoothie lollies as they hope to encourage positive body image for women via a tasty healthy diet. They are working with high profile life style coach and stylist Ceril Campbell, author of ‘discover the new you’ to give women tips on how to feel good in their own skin.

Del Monte Smoothies also called in real woman and fan of the fruity ice lollies, Denise Van Outen to comment on the findings and even she felt uncomfortable with baring all, choosing to wear a miniskirt and vest for a photoshoot to launch the findings.

She said: 'I am a normal woman and have no desire to be a size zero but I can really sympathise with these women who want to stay covered up on the beach. There is so much pressure for women to slim down and look perfect before they bare all in a bikini’.

One in four of the women who took part in the survey admitted they would feel better if they could indulge in some plastic surgery to achieve the perfect body for the beach.

The number of women not wanting to wear a bikini rose even further in the youngest group questioned with 85 per cent of 16-24 year-olds and saying they would choose not to wear a bikini because they are too self-conscious which is particularly saddening. What is happening to the confidence of our young women?

Denise added: ‘Every woman I know has issues with some part of their body and I'm no different. I do think you become more comfortable with yourself as you get older - but that doesn't mean you feel 100% happy with your body in a bikini. The results of the survey are shocking in some respects - it's really sad that the younger generation feel too self conscious to wear a bikini.’

The report also showed that bikini’s is the one area of fashion that is lacking in followers with only 1% of women choosing the ‘latest design’ preferring to make their choice based on their own body shape.

Londoners are the biggest spenders with many women in London spending over £50 on a single bikini whilst the girls in the North West went for quantity and owned an average of 10 bikinis each.

Denise, who is repeatedly voted as having the most enviable bikini body, preferred to stick to a more modest denim skirt and t-shirt rather than a bikini yesterday but the British weather is finally hotting up for August so women can expect to top up their tan rather than get soaked in the rain!

A sample of 1021 women of different ages and backgrounds were questioned for the survey which was conducted by TickBox.net on behalf of Del Monte.
