Research conducted by IDC amongst 834 IT decision makers in eight major European markets, indicates healthy growth in the market for premium carrier-neutral colocation services as provided by Interxion. IDC project that demand and prices will continue to rise at 22% CAGR until the end of the forecasting period in 2011.

The growth in demand for colocation services is part of wider growth in the overall UK datacentre market. Already the most mature market in Europe, the proportions of UK operators planning to colocate over the next 12 months (20%) or planning to open a new datacentre in the same time period (36%) are the highest in Europe.

Overall the research suggests that companies who require high availability or 24x7 IT services have an increased tendency to outsource, as do those with higher density (i.e., above average power consumption) facilities. Related to this, companies also outsource to colocation services providers in order to control costs and operating expenses.

Other factors affecting growth in the sector include both the increasing adoption and the increasing proportion of blade servers being hosted and the increased presentation of broadband amongst the European community.

The mature UK market is already stressed by concerns about operating and capital costs, and affected by a burgeoning skills shortage. This means many of the enterprises interviewed will face stark choices when attempting to balance their key datacentre requirements – resilience/uptime, cost, availability of network and of managed services and scalability/flexibility for future growth.

Anthony Foy, Group Managing Director, Interxion, comments on the research findings: “Interxion is a demand-driven organisation and its steady organic growth has largely been fuelled by increasing demand from the enterprise sector. Combining the results of the IDC/Interxion survey and several other primary research projects the company has commissioned together with a very strong sales pipeline and good run rate, Interxion has recently committed to a €90 million expansion programme.”
