The BREAD Prepaid Maestroยฎ Card that launched in April has just received the highest rating of 5 stars from โ€˜Which Prepaid Cardโ€™ ( the prepaid card comparison website.

The BREAD Card is a new breed of payment card. Unlike conventional credit cards, which provide you with a line of credit, or debit cards that are linked to a bank account with an overdraft facility, the BREAD Card is a โ€˜pay-as-you-goโ€™ card that you load with cash. When applying for a BREAD Card there are also no credit checks.

Research suggests that by 2010, 360 million people across Europe will collectively have a prepaid payment card in their pockets at any given time (Source: โ€˜A guide to prepaid cards by MasterCardโ€™).

Myles Davidson, Managing Director of Which Prepaid, commented โ€œThe BREAD card is the most cost effective prepaid card that we have reviewed to date and is the only card so far that we have awarded a five star ratingโ€, he went on to say โ€œcustomers are not charged a monthly fee, or a per use fee when using the card in the UK. To be honest when we reviewed the card we were left scratching our heads waiting for the catch. However there wasnโ€™t one.โ€

Tim Day, BREAD Card Marketing Director commented โ€œThis is a superb rating to have received and is testament to the fact that BREAD is a competitively priced and efficient financial product. It is our firm intention to be considered as the โ€˜flag-bearerโ€™ of prepaid cards in the UK, and this review suggests that this goal is rapidly becoming a realityโ€.

The BREAD Card is currently being piloted in Liverpool, and is being actively marketed at selective ASDA stores. Tim Day further commented โ€œOur hands-on approach in Liverpool has generated a surge in new customers and confirms that BREAD is a genuinely useful and economical payment card, and in particular relevant for those people that may have damaged credit history. We are now focused on rolling out the product nationally and have recently commenced a marketing campaign in Glasgowโ€.

For the full BREAD Card review on Which Prepaid please refer to:

The BREAD Card ( is a Prepaid Maestroยฎ card. It's NOT a credit card - so you can only spend what you load. It works in the same way as a โ€˜pay-as-you-goโ€™ mobile: you top it up with cash.

The BREAD Card is safer than carrying cash and you can use it to shop online, in store or over the phone.

The card costs ยฃ10; there is no monthly fee and no charge when you use it โ€“ though there is a charge of ยฃ1.50 for cash machines.

The card can be loaded with cash at any PayPointยฎ outlet (there are over 16,000 PayPointยฎ locations across the UK and there is a flat fee of ยฃ1 each time you load up your card).Loading via bank transfer/BACS/ wages transfer costs 0.25p per transaction.

There is also a flat rate charge of ยฃ1.50 to share money from a primary BREAD Card to a secondary BREAD Card, which means that BREAD is a very cost effective method of sending money to friends and family both home and abroad.
