Daresbury, UK, 4th October 2007: The UK’s leading motorway services operator Welcome Break today announced that it has improved network security to control spam and protect staff from offensive content, through a partnership with the information security services company, Vistorm.

The growing volume of unwanted e-mail has been placing a great strain on Welcome Break’s IT infrastructures, reducing employee productivity and undermining e-mail's effectiveness as a business tool. Following a straightforward implementation of Blackspider’s Managed MailControl, Welcome Break has experienced a considerable drop in spam and its 600 email users don’t now spend important working time clearing a backlog of spam.

“Spam was not that much of an issue for us until we changed our website, the new site incorporated more email addresses and this resulted in a spam explosion,” comments David Willock, IT director, Welcome Break. “Over weekend periods, between 70 and 95 per cent of all emails received were spam, resulting in the first part of Monday morning being used to clear out unwanted emails rather than for productive work.”

By blocking unwanted e-mail before it enters the network, the Vistorm managed service has drastically reduced the cost of spam. It has also removed the potential legal liabilities of unwittingly exposing employees to offensive content and also detected and prevented over 800 viruses threatening the business.
