London, 17 October 2007 – Top UP TV, a leading provider of premium TV content on Freeview, has today advised that awareness of digital switchover is widespread. However, despite this according to Digital UK 35% of the UK population people still do not realise that they will need to update their analogue VCRs.

People in London (28%) have the least understanding of what to do with regards to updating their VCR for the digital switchover, whilst those in the Border region (47%) have the greatest understanding. (Source: Ofcom and Digital UK Tracker Survey, Q2 2007.

After Whitehaven analogue TV services in the UK will start being switched off from 2008. People have already begun to replace their primary TVs but many have not thought about the need to replace their analogue VCRs. People will no longer be able to watch one channel whilst recording another using a standard analogue VCR or DVD.

“It is time for the public to start preparing to convert all of their devices and a new Digital Television Recorder (or PVR) would be ideal for analogue switchover. It’s a Freeview box and Digital TV recorder all in one,” said Roger Matthews, Top Up TV Sales & Marketing director.

Your four point guide to digital switchover
1. Digital switchover will take place between 2008 and 2012, TV region by TV Region. You can check when your TV region will go digital at
2. Digital Terrestrial TV viewers will need a digital set top box or a new television with built in digital adapter (known as an integrated digital TV, or IDTV. Some viewers may also need to replace their aerial.
3. You don’t need to replace your existing TV unless you want to but you will need a digital box such as the Top Up TV + DTR.
4. Don’t forget your video recorder: if you use a video (VCR) or DVD recorder for recording you will still be able to play back tapes/DVDs as before. But, if you want to record one digital channel while you are watching another, you’ll need a digital TV recorder with two digital tuners.
