• Companies will bring together Session Border Control and Security Border Gateway capabilities
• Solution will deliver intelligent, high-scale session management across fixed and mobile networks

Fall VON, Boston, MA – October 30, 2007 – NexTone®and Reef Point today announced the introduction of NextPoint, the world’s first Integrated Border Gateway (IBG). Combining session border controller (SBC) capabilities from NexTone and security border gateway (SBG) capabilities from Reef Point, operators now can simplify, secure and scale their next-generation IP networks to support multimedia session management over fixed and mobile networks.

“As the volume of sessions continues to grow and fixed and mobile access continues to evolve, we see mobile and fixed services approach true convergence. Operators are looking for an efficient means to manage complexity today – and to transform and scale their networks in the future,” said David Walsh, Executive Chairman, NexTone.

“The NextPoint IBG will support voice, data, video and converged applications over integrated or distributed architectures, enabling operators to reduce costs, increase intelligence and support their Next-Gen billing and operating systems,” said Woody Ritchey, CEO, Reef Point.

The NextPoint IBG provides intelligent-edge solutions for fixed, wireless and blended operators seeking secure, high-scale, global interconnectivity.

• Reduced operating expenditures. Functional elements of a security gateway, traffic shaper, SBC, and proxy server are incorporated into a single solution.

• Advanced border security and scale. The NextPoint IBG incorporates best of breed security elements that include transport and signaling layer security with the highest performance and scale available in the industry.

• Real-time service quality for mobile and fixed networks. Both the access side and the trunking area of the network have real-time quality of service, security and session management.

• Ability to ride the edge of changing technologies. Because their network is IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) compliant today, operators can enjoy the security of knowing their network is future-proofed for IMS edge elements.

• Vendor freedom of choice. The NextPoint IBG is standards compliant to deliver the benefits of edge-to-edge and global interconnectivity without locking the operator into a single vendor.

• Flexibility. Available as an integrated or distributed solution, giving operators the freedom to build and expand their networks over time.

“NexTone and Reef Point are breaking new ground in delivering the integration of functions that will fulfill several important requirements of the increasingly complex access edge,” said Joe McGarvey, Heavy Reading analyst, and author of ‘Convergence Gateways, FMC, & the Future of Session Management’.

In his report, published earlier this year, Mr. McGarvey wrote, “In recent quarters, much of the innovation in the FMC space has come from equipment vendors that are largely focused on mobile operators. These vendors are broadening the functionality of what started out as transport-layer security devices to include a number of upper-layer functions, including policy enforcement, QoS assurance, protection against denial-of-service (DOS) attacks, and mobility management. These devices, sometimes referred to as ‘universal access gateways’ or ‘convergence gateways,’ are being further expanded to manage sessions coming into the network from a variety of access technologies, and in some cases to take on some of the capabilities of an SBC – a potentially attractive option for carriers with fixed and mobile assets looking to consolidate as much of their networks as possible.”

The NextPoint IBG will be available by the end of 2007 for test deployments, and will be generally available during the first half of 2008.
