WELSH HOSPITAL OFFERS FIRST KNEE IMPLANT Wednesday 31 October 2007 PDF Print A revolutionary new artificial knee joint specially designed for women is now available for the first time in Wales. The first Welsh patient underwent the knee replacement operation at Spire Cardiff Hospital (formerly BUPA Hospital Cardiff) last week and specialist knee surgeon Rhidian Morgan-Jones is delighted with the result. "The operation was a success and the woman is now recovering well. Using the gender specific knee has given a much better result." "There is a distinct difference between men and women’s knees and up till now surgeons have often had to make compromises during surgery to make a traditional knee implant fit a female knee," he said. The new implant is designed to fit the female anatomy – it’s thinner with a contoured shape and has a greater range of motion so it feels more like a natural knee. This knee replacement operation is not offered on the NHS in Wales but for women with severe pain or advanced joint disease, a knee replacement is extremely successful for relieving pain and restoring joint function. "Because this implant is much more suitable for many women and there are five different sizes available, the patient may be back to normal activity much sooner," he added. "I recently saw an ex-ballerina who told me she wants to take up flamenco dancing but needs a joint replacement and this will be perfect for her." < ENDS > NB: Mr Rhidian Morgan-Jones is available for interview For more information please contact: Judith Hall Spire Cardiff Hospital 029 20542504 email@example.com http://www.spirehealthcare.com Notes to editors: Spire Healthcare is one of the leading independent hospital providers in the UK, with a 25 year heritage of customer service and clinical excellence.
