The publisher behind the Yellow Pages revealed today that it has switched its complex business applications from Oracle to PostgreSQL, an Open Source database. Sirius Corporation, the UK's leading provider of PostgreSQL support and development expertise, has assisted pre-press supplier Pindar Set with the move.

The key business driver for the migration was the desire to eliminate the high-costs of Oracle's software licensing. However, Pindar Set has also experienced significant performance improvements with applications now running up to four times faster than before.

Pindar Set's announcement comes after a recent survey by the Independent Oracle User Group which states that more than one-third of respondents have Open Source databases in production.

Mark Taylor, CEO, Sirius said: "In our experience only 12% of current Oracle users are unable to reproduce the functionality they want in PostgreSQL. Everyone else will make massive cost savings, improve performance and keep the high-end features they rely on."

Aniela Wyspianska, Project Manager, Pindar Set said: "Sirius provides Pindar Set with expert technical support for PostgreSQL. Their involvement in this latest project is the outcome of a successful, long-term business relationship."
