Connaught House have just re-launched their website and are already noticing the significance of utilising websites for its customers orders.

Connaught House was established 14 years ago with family team Peter, Mike & Chris. Since the single shop beginnings, it has grown to 8 shops spread throughout Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire specialising in Gifts, Collectables, Jewellery and Kitchenware. It first started trading on the internet in 1998, and since then has had moderate success, “but now it’s time for change” says Chris Allsopp, the family member and Director responsible for New Ventures and Web Sales.

“People are changing, customers want to buy when it’s convenient to them, whether that be in their lunch hour at work, or when they have just seen an advert on TV.” Speaking about this years wonder product, the ‘One Touch Can Opener from Culinare’ Chris says “We could tell when the advert was on TV from the sales figures. People went to their computers and bought from the internet” It’s interesting to see the influx of orders at lunch time during the week as well when some people have access to PC’s at work to place orders or browse the internet. Peak periods also include the 5.30-7pm slot when people are returning home from work, with fresh knowledge of products and websites they have learned from their friends and colleague at work.

Chris also said that it was also a very conscious decision to make the website postage free. “Having a lot of experience of trading on eBay and Amazon, I know from the research we have gained that the postage element is a problem for many customers. In our shops we don’t charge customers for carrier bags or staff to clean shelves or display products, it would be absurd. These charges are absorbed by the price of the product. It had to be the same on the website, so no matter what a customer buys, it has the same level of service being posted out within 24 hours with no postage charge. I have heard customers saying so many times that they searched the internet for prices, and found the cheapest website but then would have to pay extra for postage making it more expensive. I’m sure all websites will come to see this flaw in time, but until then we have a unique selling point which I am very proud of.”
