Server and Storage Virtualisation Shrinks Data Centre by 30 Per Cent and Reduces Associated Energy Consumption

Amersham, UK – 4th December, 2007 – gm2 Logistics Ltd, a Greater London-based warehousing and logistics company, serving the UK and Ireland, has reduced its data centre footprint, and associated energy consumption, by more than 30 per cent following the deployment of an energy-efficient storage area network (SAN) from Compellent and server virtualisation technology from VMware.

The IT infrastructure at gm2 Logistics supports two central and seven regional distribution centres that are responsible for warehousing, trucking, shipping, and other services for one of the largest paper merchants in the UK and Ireland.

The company’s ageing storage system had struggled to support growing demand for capacity, yet maintaining availability across the company’s 80 servers was critical. To address this issue, gm2 Logistics turned to storage and server virtualisation from Compellent and VMware to simplify data management and ensure business continuity.

"Thanks to virtualisation we‘ve been able to eliminate more than a third of the hardware from our environment entirely," says John Boyd, IT Manager at gm2 Logistics. "That means we’re consuming significantly less power, which is both great for the environment and financially,” he added.

Compellent’s SAN can help companies enhance the efficiency of data storage and overcome the challenges created by unrestrained data centre growth. By combining technologies such as automated tiered storage, thin provisioning and storage virtualisation, Compellent helps enterprises better use capacity and decrease storage costs, and consequently minimises the costs of powering, cooling and housing equipment.

Andy Hardy, managing director of international sales at Compellent, adds: "Through virtualisation, companies can drastically reduce the cost of their data centre while also slashing the environmental impact of running their data centres. Compellent's storage virtualisation design and automated tiered storage, thin provisioning and continuous snapshots are 'must-haves' for IT managers evaluating virtualisation strategies to reduce complexity and enable disaster recovery."
