Automated Tiered Storage Reduces Expenditures by 50 percent and Triples Performance without Additional Administrative Effort

Amersham, U.K., Dec. 11, 2007 – Compellent Technologies today announced that DiscoverReady, a discovery management and litigation support services firm based in New York City, has selected Compellent’s Storage Center storage area network (SAN) to enhance its data storage performance and reduce capital disk expenditures.

DiscoverReady is the latest among a growing number of professional services firms turning to highly-scalable, modular enterprise storage to speed daily processing of legal documents for litigation and regulatory compliance.

DiscoverReady helps Fortune 100 companies meet regulatory compliance requirements and review data -- from email trails to merger documentation -- in the event of audits or litigation by providing first pass document review and discovery management services. The firm prepares and processes terabytes of data annually.

To maximize profitability, DiscoverReady’s goal is to quickly inventory, upload and process documents for cases so that attorneys can rapidly review and categorize them. This allows the expert lawyers and auditors hired by their clients to spend their billable time inspecting only the most relevant files.

“As a legal services firm, we need our professionals to spend as much time as possible on billable work, not on finding the right files, or inventorying documents,” said Rachi Messing, vice president of technology services at DiscoverReady. “Compellent’s automated tiered storage -- which requires no administration by our IT support or our attorneys -- makes documents available for review three times faster than before. No other storage vendor offered this amount of power and simplicity.”

Before implementing the Compellent SAN, DiscoverReady used a network-attached storage system that required significant administrative time and high capital investments in disks. The Compellent iSCSI SAN has boosted performance, lowered administrative time and capital investments, and has met all the firm’s business requirements for fast storage, built-in redundancy and effective management of the legal data lifecycle.

For DiscoverReady, a typical case can start with about 2 GB of documents and expand quickly to 1 TB or more in size. Often after initial processing is completed, data sits for periods of time before an attorney is ready to review a specific document, and no longer requires the highest performance available. Compellent’s automated tiered storage software moves data according to policies set by DiscoverReady as a case progresses, from the initial processing stage through the review period and beyond. This frees up valuable high-performance storage resources and eliminates time-consuming and risky manual transferring of data between tiers.

“We’ve estimated a savings of 50 percent in hardware costs,” continued Messing. “When you take improvements in performance, reliability, and manageability into account, however, it’s impossible to quantify the positive benefit of the Compellent SAN to our business.”

Other benefits of the Compellent SAN for DiscoverReady include:

Flexibility: DiscoverReady easily supports multiple clients with varying production timelines because their case files are now all centrally housed, and only the most actively accessed documents are stored on high-performance drives.

Disaster recovery: features like space-efficient snapshots and remote replication provide quick recovery from data hazards during processing, saving time and frustration.

Reporting and analysis: Compellent Enterprise Manager software identifies trends and usage patterns, providing system-wide and granular, volume-specific reports. As case data grows, the firm’s IT staff can use thin provisioning software to allocate storage from a single virtualized pool without using physical capacity until data is written by the application.

Besides DiscoverReady, other firms associated with the legal industry including Krieg DeVault, Zelle Hoffman, Fabayanske Westra & Hart, and Wolfe Ritter have chosen Compellent’s scalable, modular SAN to reduce their infrastructure expenditures and administrative costs of enterprise storage.
