New Steganos Secure E-Mail provides low cost encrypted e-mail to protect internet users from identity theft and snoopers Monday 17 December 2007 PDF Print From £3.95 per month; users able to send confidential information securely; free access for recipients 17 December 2007 - Steganos, a leader in security and privacy software for consumers and SMEs, has launched Steganos Secure E-Mail, a service that encrypts users’ e-mails to ensure the contents cannot be read by anybody other than the intended recipient. Recipients are provided with free guest access to the service in order to pick up encrypted e-mails that have been sent by Steganos Secure E-Mail users and reply with encrypted e-mails. Available immediately, the service is based on a technique called ‘asymmetrical encryption’ which uses public and private encryption keys instead of “classic” passwords. The public gate key is used for encryption, and the private key is used for decryption. Both are linked to one another, and any data that is encrypted with one key can only be decrypted by its counterpart, and vice versa. The public key can be distributed, but only the owner possesses the private key. Aston Fallen, CEO of Steganos said, “Billions of unencrypted e-mails are sent every day. As technology use becomes more widespread, people increasingly send confidential information over e-mail. They do this without thinking of the repercussion of those e-mails being intercepted, copied, forwarded or even changed, which can be done with a surprisingly low level of technical knowledge.” Other features include a phonebook-like index service called LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol). This allows licence holders to check if someone they want to mail to is already a participants of the service. Searching the index is only possible as long as they know their exact e-mail address, as a search function for mail fragments is not available. This ensures that senders can only contact people if they know their complete e-mail address, eliminating the opportunity for spammers. If the desired recipient does not use Steganos Secure E-Mail yet, the user can automatically send that person an invitation for a free two-week guest access, which enables the exchange of encrypted e-mails without having to install Steganos Secure E-Mail: downloading the guest certificate is all it takes. The service is based on standards embedded within common e-mail programmes, including S/MIME, X509 and LDAP, so it works with packages such as Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Outlook Express, Microsoft Windows Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird and Gnome/Novell Evolution. Notes: Steganos Secure E-Mail™ is based on established standards that are supported by most of the prevalent e-mail programs: S-MIME, X509 and LDAP. Asymmetric encryption is achieved with Bit RSA keys, symmetric encryption with 168 Bit 3DES. Easy handling and detailed step-by-step instructions, Steganos Secure E-Mail allows less experienced users to use encryption for their communication and therefore protect their privacy.
