If you're one of the thousands of men rushing out to buy last minute gifts this weekend, a new survey might help.

Community website www.makefriendsonline.com ran a seasonal poll to find out whether women preferred the romance of a surprise gift or the practicality of a requested one.

Whilst nearly 30% of men say they play safe by asking their partners what they want, a resounding 85% of women would rather be surprised. It really is the thought that counts!

So, when you're rushing off to the shops, don't ask her what she needs, ask yourself what she might want.

The Men were asked:

When buying a Christmas gift for your partner, do you feel it's better to ...

a. Ask them what they want (to make sure you get them something they like).
b. Surprise them with something you've thought up yourself.

2,028 men answered, of whom 28.4% would ask and 71.6% would opt for a surprise.

The Women were asked:

When receiving a Christmas gift from your partner, do you prefer they ...

a. Ask you what you want (so you get something you like).
b. Give you a surprise gift which they've thought of themselves.

2,583 women answered, of whom 14.91% would prefer to tell their partner what to buy and 85.09% hope for a surprise gift.
