A survey into our nutrition and eating habits released today reveals that over half the nation (55%) is still only consuming 3 portions or less of fruit and veg a day, despite 92% admitting that they know the recommended daily amount is five.

Even more surprisingly, the research commissioned by Appletiser uncovers that the age group least concerned about their 5 A Day intake was the youngest generation. 70% of 18-24 year olds confess that they only eat 3 or less portions on an average day, with 4% of that category not eating any fruit or veg at all!

So why do we continue to be a nation that struggles to have their 5 A Day?

The research reveals that almost a fifth of those 18-24 year olds who are not getting the recommended 5 A Day openly admit that it is because they don’t actually like fruit or vegetables. Amongst all of the age groups the most common excuse given for not getting 5 A Day was not having enough time, with over a quarter (28%) blaming time-poor lifestyles as the biggest challenge. Interestingly 22% said they simply ‘can’t be bothered’.

There also seem to be some big discrepancies between different professions and their 5 A Day habits finding that:

• Those working in Sales or the Civil Service who eat less than 5 A Day, appear to have a care free attitude with a third (33%) saying they were not interested in eating the recommended portions.

• IT workers that don’t eat 5 A Day struggle the most when it comes to getting hold of fruit and vegetable sources, with 17% saying they are simply not sure how to get hold of them.
• 11% of skilled labourers that don’t get the recommended amount simply don’t understand the concept of 5 A Day
• A quarter of full time students that don’t eat 5 A Day don’t think that the necessary sources are accessible enough

Anita Bean, RNutr, nutritionist and best selling author comments: ‘It’s surprising that, despite high awareness of the 5 A Day message, most people are still failing considerably, with the average person eating only about half of the recommended number of portions of fruit and vegetables.”

 It doesn’t just have to be food - have a glass of fruit juice. A drink such as Appletiser feels indulgent but it contributes to your 5-A-Day intake.

 Stir green veg such as broccoli florets, spinach and cabbage into soups, curries and hotpots.
