Shrewd German regional telco EWE TEL has avoided a costly infrastructure upgrade to save thousands of Euro a month in call routing costs thanks to the skills of its in-house software development team and the versatility of its Telsis infrastructure.

The savings stem from the innovative way EWE TEL supports mobile number portability. Conventionally calls to ported mobile numbers would be routed via the subscriber's first network, incurring a cost penalty for the originating telco. But Telsis-powered intelligent call handling means EWE TEL can now deliver such calls direct, eliminating transit charges completely.

"We're saving money all the time and we'll achieve payback in just a few months," explains Heiner Meyer, EWE TEL's public voice services group leader. "The Telsis solution is fast, took only days to develop and didn't cost anything in extra hardware."

The alternative would have been a paid-for upgrade of EWE TEL's core network switches together with the purchase of additional software. Instead an existing Telsis Ocean fastSCP Service Control Point references a database of all ported numbers and - using INAP signalling - instructs the switches where to route calls. The whole process takes a few milliseconds and is entirely transparent to callers.

Telsis Ocean fastSCPs were first installed at EWE TEL in a move to introduce value-added services for its customers, controlling the telco's range of switches. The new mobile number portability application runs on the same Telsis hardware, which needed no further upgrading or expansion. Now EWE TEL potentially has yet more ambitious plans.

"The Telsis system is very flexible with its software-based implementation," says Meyer. "We currently offer some local number services which run direct in the network switches but there is a limit on how much each switch can do. By moving the application onto the SCP we remove the limits. Even then there is still potential to do yet more."

EWE TEL is a long-standing Telsis customer and has rolled out several other innovative services by coding applications in-house using the Telsis graphical service creation environment. They include a value added services platform for third-party operators, intelligent call routing and interactive services.

Telsis products are in use with major mobile and fixed network operators worldwide. The company has an extensive range of carrier-grade infrastructure solutions including intelligent SMS and voice platforms, as well as gateways and application servers for NGN and IMS support. Telsis has a long history of helping operators make money through the introduction of innovative value added services, and is now leading the industry in moving SMS to the service layer.
