Voxswap – 'a social network with a point' – launches today Thursday 17 January 2008 PDF Print Voxswap.com launches today to match the millions of people around the world learning one another’s languages so they can help each other progress for free. In a bid to create what its co-founders call ‘social networking with a point’ the site allows people to set up profiles, stating which language(s) they speak and which they are practising. They can then browse fellow Voxswap users so, for example, an English person learning German, can be matched with a German learning English. The Voxswap site features internal email, chat and forums to get people speaking to one another and allows users to personalise their profiles with video, pictures, tags and further information about themselves. The really clever part, however, is where Voxswap goes the extra mile with unique, linguistic-friendly additional features. There is a virtual keyboard which supports multiple languages (so you can add accents and characters your home or work PC does not support), a built-in Google Translator service and news feeds in multiple languages, allowing users to read the news in the language they are practising. The site has been co-founded by freelance journalist Sean Hargrave and his wife Nicole. Sean had been having difficulty finding a way to practise his very rusty German and, at the same time, was becoming convinced social networking sites are becoming too huge to be useful for people. “I am convinced social networking is here to stay but it needs to have a point. There’s no benefit in creating long lists of so-called friends and business contacts you never actually meet or contact,” he says. “That’s why I decided to launch a social network site that will help people learn or practise a foreign language so everybody benefits. I couldn’t find the site I was looking for, so I decided to build it.” It is free for users to register on Voxswap.com. Its co-founders are now drawing-up plans for further growth and are available for interview at your request.
