New Customers and an Increase in Social Media Applications Fuel Exponential Growth

January 25, 2008 - Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: AKAM), the leading global service provider for accelerating content and applications online, today announced that traffic on its platform related to its social media customers saw significant growth over the past year. Akamai consistently delivers more than 1 million requests per second for businesses in the social media space, and according to data released by Hitwise for December 2007, Akamai supported 7 of the top 10 most trafficked social networking sites and 92% of social networking site visits in the U.S.

Akamai works with dozens of leading social media destination sites, as well as key technologies and applications that form this global ecosystem, including Bebo, Facebook, Friendster, Metacafe, MySpace, RockYou, Slide, and Tagged. Many of these companies were previously using other Content Delivery Networks or leveraging in-house technology, but over the last year realized their growth had surpassed the ability of those solutions to continue to manage the delivery and acceleration needs of their sites.
