• Stonemartin receives a warm reception from local Reading University students following business seminar event at Davidson House, Reading

Reading, UK, Friday 25th January 2008: Last night over 20 students from the local university descended on Stonemartin’s Reading premises, Davidson House, to engage in a business seminar. The session was arranged by General Manager for Davidson House, Paul Spencer, and law student Alex Blondin, who is a member of the University’s Business Society.

Stonemartin provided its impressive fifth floor suite, overlooking Forbury Gardens, as well as refreshments to the group of future business leaders. The session was conducted from 6-8 pm on Thursday 24th January and included talks from two local businessmen – Daryll Scott, joint Managing Director for personal development consultancy, Use Your Noggin, and Paul Spencer, General Manager for Davidson House, and both presentations were very well received.

Paul Spencer thoroughly enjoyed the experience: “It was great to be able to speak to such an enthusiastic and creative group of people with such interesting ideas and opinions. There were plenty of questions after the session and the group seemed genuinely engaged in what we were saying. I really hope we can do something like this again in the future and that it has been of benefit to those who came.”

The initiative was spear headed by local student Alex Blondin, who had met Paul while he was judging a Dragon’s Den-style competition that Alex was competing in as part of the University’s Enterprise Experience scheme. Paul had offered Alex work experience in Davidson House, leading him to approach Paul about this idea.

Alex comments: “I am so pleased everything went well, I must admit I was pretty nervous, but we had a really good turn out and the talks were very relevant and useful - it felt great to be doing something off our own backs. I am really grateful to Paul and Daryll for giving up their time, everyone I have spoken to enjoyed the event and would be interested in attending similar evenings in future, which hopefully is something we can explore at a later date.”

Paul’s presentation used his 18 years experience in the private sector to provide an overview of corporate life and the demands of management, with a particular focus on sales. Paul walked the audience through his experiences in the sales industry, providing examples of different sales methods.

The group also heard from local entrepreneur, NLP Master Practitioner and author of a new business manual on NLP, Daryll Scott. Before co-founding personal development consultancy, Use Your Noggin, with his business partner, Ben Houghton, Daryll ran his own design agency. Daryll’s talk provided an alternative view, drawing from over ten years experience of running his own business discussing: what it takes to set up on your own, what things you need to consider before starting out, how you can manage the risks involved and the advantages and disadvantages of being a small business.

Daryll was delighted to be involved: “I really enjoyed myself. It’s great to see a group of young people who are genuinely interested in business and want to take part in things like this. We had some really intelligent feedback from the talks and I was really impressed by the calibre of the students that attended.”
