Is bundling the best option for everyone?

Sky Broadband and BT have today recorded rapid growth in the broadband market. Sky Broadband has reported broadband growth of 260,000 to 1.2 million customers, with Sky Talk growing 35 per cent, from 236,000 to 915,000. BT has also taken its retail customer base to 4.3 million, securing its position as the UK’s biggest ISP.
47 per cent of Sky customers now bundle their products with at least one other Sky product, an increase of 17 per cent on the previous year.

Some ISPs want every slice of your home entertainment pie: they want to supply your broadband, home phone line and digital TV. But is bundling best or can solo providers offer equally competitive deals?

Michael Phillips, product development manager, says “BT is still king of the broadband market in the UK, however Sky now represents a significant threat due to the strength of their digital TV services. Although it’s still early days for BT Vision, with only 150,000 users currently taking the service, Sky is clearly winning the battle to persuade customers they offer the best TV and broadband bundle.”

He continues “Sky is clearly in pole position if the market is becoming ‘bundle-led’ with broadband becoming a commoditised ‘add-on’. However, I would advise customers to think carefully before taking up the ‘shiny’ advertised offers, as bundling may not suit everyone. If you rely heavily on your broadband then you should consider paying a little more in order to get a niche broadband package that caters to your needs.

“Smaller niche provider such as Be there, PlusNet and Madasafish, could offer better commitment to customer service and technical support. Consumers need to shop around to ensure they choose the best deal to suit their needs.”
