Gemalto Delivers New Generation e-Health Insurance Cards Solution to Slovenia Tuesday 19 February 2008 PDF Print First Java™ PKI electronic health insurance cards in Europe Amsterdam, February 19, 2008 – Gemalto (Euronext NL0000400653 GTO), the leader in digital security, today announced that it will provide leading Health Sector specialists ZZZS and Cetis with a comprehensive solution for the latest generation of electronic health cards for Slovenian citizens. This new electronic health card is the first of its kind in Europe to feature a Java public key infrastructure (PKI) that will further secure the online health system via a digital signature for health professionals. Gemalto’s Coesys Issuance solution to be delivered in Slovenia consists of middleware, digital signature capabilities, software applications, applets and cards. Cetis, Slovenia's leader in security document printing will operate the personalization of the cards and the PKI infrastructure. ZZZS, the Health Insurance Institute of Slovenia, in charge of the National Health Insurance Card System, will act as system integrator and will issue the cards to the citizens. The whole solution ensures backward compatibility with the existing infrastructure. Mr. Marjan Sušelj, Director of the HIC System Sector at ZZZS, comments: “Our eHealth 2010 strategic plan has the ambitious objective to inter-connect health information systems on the national level, ensuring eServices and transparent information to all relevant parties in a secure and efficient way. The Gemalto technology is one of the key enablers to put in place this eBusiness model for a common way of work in the Slovenian health sector by 2010”. In 2000, Slovenia was among the very first countries, with France, to introduce microprocessor-based health cards. The country is now renewing and upgrading the two million e-health cards currently in circulation in the country. The latest generation of Gemalto e-health solutions for Slovenia will significantly enhance online services for health professionals by enabling them to go through their administrative tasks faster and exchange medical data and messages with hospitals and other health professionals in an easy and secure manner. “Gemalto is proud to contribute to this innovative project highlighting once again the pioneering role of Slovenia in the digital security arena” adds Jacques Seneca, Executive Vice President of Gemalto in charge of the Security Business Unit. “The introduction of this new PKI based solution is further evidence of Gemalto and its partners’ commitment towards innovation that provides better security and convenience for governments and citizens”.
