Oxfordshire County Council to Text Flood Warnings to Residents Monday 25 February 2008 PDF Print Oxfordshire County Council is implementing an Avanquest Text Messaging Solution as part of their Emergency Planning procedures. Text Message Server will be used to communicate flood warnings to residents. The project is scheduled to go live this month. Flooding is one of the most common emergencies. The Environment Agency are encouraging Local Government to be ‘better prepared’ in the case of flood warning services. In July 2007, following excessive rainfall, the rivers Cherwell and Isis/Thames, which traverse Oxfordshire, flooded. Advance warning of a potential flood gives property owners the chance to prepare and take the necessary action to minimise damage. Oxfordshire County Council has been using text messaging as a means of communication since 2003. They have now replaced the original systems with Text Message Server. “We reviewed the use of our existing system and decided to improve resilience by introducing the Avanquest text solution” said John Kelly, County Emergency Planning Officer at Oxfordshire County Council. “We believe it is vital that we can give warning to the public and alert our staff though text messaging. The advantage of the Avanquest solution is that it is free to the public. The small cost of our existing system per year to the public has hindered take up." Text Message Server integrates with almost every business application, 'straight from the box'. SMS messages can be sent and received on the desktop and/or the software can be used to work with alerting and other automated systems.
