Lapstone: The Lifestyle store of the Cotswolds Wednesday 27 February 2008 PDF Print Simon Hudson, owner of Lapstone, invites us into his Oasis of Calm. Tucked away in an office just outside Chipping Campden you will find Simon Hudson, the owner and the brains behind Lapstone, a refreshing lifestyle store for the Cotswolds. Lapstone provides retail, culinary and beauty therapy, all set in an idyllic 18th century barn conversion and farm complex. ‘I have always believed in a different type of shopping: a gentle atmosphere and a relaxed environment’ says Simon, ‘We go the extra mile to bring you a constantly renewing range of products from around the world – many of which are exclusive to Lapstone’. SHOP, EAT AND PAMPER Mostly by word of mouth Lapstone is well known as an Oasis of Calm. The exquisite gift shop is an ideal place to put the finishing touches to a home or garden, or to buy a beautiful and unique gift for a loved one. This outstanding establishment showcases the best in modern design along with traditional classics. Once people are all shopped out they can enjoy a meal in Lapstone’s lovely café which uses locally sourced, seasonal produce to provide the finest coffee, patisserie, light lunches and afternoon teas. Their outdoor terrace has stunning views over the surrounding countryside. It’s no wonder that the Lapstone café was voted the 13th best café in the UK by The Independent Newspaper. If this isn’t enough to soothe the stress of daily life then why not indulge in ultimate luxury at The Escape, Lapstone’s on-site beauty spa. The Escape, set in the tranquil surroundings of Lapstone Farm will immediately create a sense of relaxation and wellbeing. SIMON HUDSON The Lapstone experience is a relatively new venture for Simon, which opened in October 2006. After completing his Psychology degree at Durham University, Simon spent four years as an Army officer. He then worked at a top London Advertising Agency before getting married and deciding to live in the country. ‘Ginny, my wife, and I knew we wanted to start a family and agreed we wanted our children to grow up in the countryside so it was a pretty easy decision to make’ says Simon. The move to the country saw Simon start work in a Marketing Consultancy in Oxfordshire, and after many successful years he felt it was the right time to start his own business, and so, in 1991 Oxley’s Garden Furniture was born. OXLEY'S FURNITURE Importing castings from South Africa, Oxley’s handmake only the finest quality solid aluminium garden furniture. Furniture is made to order using traditional casting techniques; there are no nuts, bolts or fixings used in the construction. You can find Oxley’s furniture in top end retailers in the UK including Harrods and in various European countries and Japan. Naturally, you will also find Oxley’s rust and rot proof garden furniture at Lapstone. You may be asking why the move from marketing to garden furniture? ‘This is the question that everybody asks and I wish I had a definitive answer’, says Simon. ‘Well I actually started doing something in between – I made planters out of oak and slate. Whilst I was doing that my friend knew this South African foundry and we both decided it would be better to do the garden furniture together’. This decision proved very successful for Simon and enabled him to focus on his next project which was creating the haven today known as Lapstone. HAPPY MIX Lapstone came about because the Oxley’s factory had been occupying the beautiful site of Lapstone Farm above Chipping Campden for 8 years and Simon had always planned to do something more with it. ‘Its such a beautiful site with so much potential that the time came for us to utilise this’, says Simon. It is quite apparent that Simon has used the Lapstone building to its full potential. It’s a happy mix that strives to offer original lifestyle and food products. So why not visit Lapstone and enjoy the impressive views of the surrounding Cotswolds, along with a pleasurable dining, shopping and beauty experience.
