Birmingham is fielding its first XI at MIPIM, the world’s biggest property conference and exhibition, which takes place at Cannes in France from Tuesday, March 11, to Friday, March 14.

Eleven of the top developers and property consultants who will be transforming the city’s skyline over the next four years will be joined by a team from the city council on a giant Birmingham stand which is intended to dominate the event which this year is expected to attract 28,000 delegates from all over the world. They are supported by 12 other sponsors who have also supported Team Birmingham financially.

Mike Whitby, Leader of Birmingham City Council, explained: “MIPIM is where the major global players decide where they are going to spend billions of pounds on property development.

“Birmingham has an estimated £17 billion of construction underway over the next ten years and we need to ensure that we are putting our case for the next generation of investment.

“We have moved out of the Championship of European cities and we are now on the rise up the Premiership of European cities but there is still a long way to go.

“We want a Champions League place and we are competing for the attention of the world’s investors against not only our home teams like London, Manchester and Glasgow but also against Berlin, Paris, Barcelona, Milan and the like.

“But the results so far speak for themselves. Cast your eyes around Birmingham’s skyline and count the cranes.”

The developers who have thrown their weight behind the Birmingham stand at MIPIM include Abstract Land Ltd, Argent Group plc, Ballymore Properties, Birmingham Development Company, Dandara Ltd, Development Securities, Goodman, The Carlyle Group, Keepmoat plc, Targetfollow Group Ltd and Arena Central Developments LLP.

Also supporting Birmingham’s presence are Aedas Architects, Buro Four, Calthorpe Estates, Deloitte, DLA Piper, Glenn Howells Architects, Birmingham Alliance c/o Land Securities, Masshouse Developments, Rider Levett Bucknall and Wragge & Co.

DBK Back and Birmingham International Airport are also behind the push to promote Birmingham at MIPIM.

Mike Whitby said: “These companies are responsible for £16.7 billion worth of shining new building that will transform the way we think and feel about our city.

“Investment that will bring an estimated 40,000 new jobs to the city with the youngest population - most under 25s - the fastest growing professional sector and the most diverse ethnic mix in the UK.

“New jobs are being created in a high-tech environment that will mean greater opportunities for everyone who lives in Birmingham.

“These will not only be service industry jobs, they will also be hi-tech and professional posts that will offer careers and the possibility of advancement to thousands of Birmingham citizens during the second decade of the 21st century.

“MIPIM 2008 is where Birmingham starts battling for its share of the next generation of global development money – cash the city needs to win if it is to continue its relentless progress up the European super league of cities.”
