Care Factor Computer Services to use Future Facilities’ 6Sigma DC to increase resilient Data Center services Tuesday 25 March 2008 PDF Print Based in Calgary, Canada, Care Factor International provides a range of IT solutions from data center assessment, design and build services to co-location hosting, facilities management, business continuity, and data management services. Care Factor has recently signed a deal with Future Facilities Inc., a company with specialised computational fluid dynamics (CFD) expertise for data centers and mission critical facilities, and is using its 6Sigma DC software suite in the design and operations of its computing facilities. “We’re thrilled with the 6Sigma DC software suite” said Craig Richardson, Vice President, Sales & Marketing at Care Factor. “We take an ecosystem approach to the design, management, maintenance and optimisation of data centers. In 6Sigma DC we have an integrated software solution which is equally relevant to the data center designer and the facility manager and can be used to great effect throughout the operational lifecycle.” In addition to its own co-location facilities, Care Factor also provides ongoing Facilities Management (FM) services at over 40 other data centers throughout Western Canada. “The company built its reputation by designing and constructing data centers,” continued Craig Richardson. “However, as IT networks and equipment have become increasingly complex, customers have recognised that computer rooms do not simply manage themselves. Therefore Care Factor has developed a thriving FM Practice to fulfil this need.” “The main problems are typically associated with power and cooling, especially where blade servers and other high density equipment is concerned,” continued Richardson. By using the CFD capabilities of 6Sigma DC to analyze the impact of changes being made within the data center as IT equipment is upgraded and refreshed, Care Factor can quickly and accurately assess and mitigate any evolving risk of thermal build-up or hot spots. 6Sigma DC software can model physical features such as air flow, pressure distribution, floor-space load and power allocation within facilities. The software creates a 3D walk-through model of the data center known as a Virtual Facility© which allows managers to analyse the effects of installation and placement of components such as servers, disk arrays and air-conditioning units. The mathematically exact 3D model can be used in the design phase so that the optimal layout and configuration of space and infrastructure can be achieved. Then as the equipment inventory accommodated within the facility is changed during its lifecycle, the software can be used to determine the optimum location for new equipment. 6Sigma DC thus allows managers to make projections of how facilities will perform as they evolve over their operational lifetime. “We have developed best practices which are applied throughout the facilities in our care,” said Craig Richardson. “As one of the largest co-location service providers in Western Canada, we are also using 6Sigma DC in our own facilities to validate design concepts and evaluate changes before they are implemented. 6Sigma DC is a powerful visualization tool which enables us to optimize airflow management within these dynamic environments.” In doing so, 6Sigma DC is helping Care Factor to drive operational efficiencies, keeping a check on energy use and therefore cost, as well as reducing the carbon footprint of their data centers. Craig Richardson concludes “our primary business role is to ensure capacity and availability for our customers’ IT services, but we also have a moral obligation to be good environmental stewards. Future Facilities’ 6Sigma DC plays an important part in helping Care Factor succeed in both objectives.” For more details regarding Future Facilities Ltd., the 6 Sigma DC software suite and the Virtual Facility, please contact Hassan Moezzi on +44 (0) 20 7840 9540 or Damien Wells at Spa Communications on 07900 302102.
