Implementation of Cognos 8 helps drive BI change at Scottish Government Agency Monday 19 May 2008 PDF Print Highlands & Islands Enterprise Improves Reporting with help of Morgan Benjamin 19th May, 2008; Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) is the Scottish Government’s economic and community development agency for a diverse region which covers more than half of Scotland. HIE aims to build sustainable economic growth in all parts of the Highlands and Islands, and delivers its services through area teams located from Lerwick in Shetland to Lochgilphead in Argyll. With the help of Business Intelligence specialist Morgan Benjamin, HIE is now reaping the benefits of an intuitive system offering a high level of reporting that allows them to manage their service provision more effectively and analyse and understand the impact of their activity. Andy Sarjeant, Project Manager at HIE said, “Morgan Benjamin worked closely with us to understand our business and our need for both accurate and clearly presented data. Their work has had a significant impact on our business, transferring knowledge in how to exploit the potential of Cognos 8 to staff in both information systems and business teams. Reporting is also now a simple point and click activity, with the integrity of the figures guaranteed. Morgan Benjamin took the time to understand our requirements and through that we have gained some excellent results with the upgrade of our BI environment.” Morgan Benjamin worked with HIE to upgrade its existing reporting suite to Business Intelligence platform Cognos 8. Reporting with Cognos BI caters for all types of reports, from simple project lists to high volume billings and high impact business dashboards. Users have the ability to create reports containing any number of report objects including charts, cross tabs, and lists as well as non-BI components such as images, logos and live embedded applications that can be linked to the information. These objects allow organisations to extend the boundaries of traditional reporting by giving them unprecedented ways to view business performance. As part of the upgrade, HIE decided to look at the change as an opportunity to review and improve its existing BI infrastructure. Morgan Benjamin ran internal workshops to fully explain the potential gains from the new software and a strategy was put into place to create the new environment. A single ‘website’ approach to reporting was taken whereby an entry point dashboard displayed high level charts and information which could be mined to expose subsequent dashboards. Links acted as an intuitive roadmap where novices could easily navigate to reach the data required. David Morgan, Director at Morgan Benjamin commented; “Such willingness to embrace change is refreshing. HIE are pushing the boundaries of information management. The synergy gained from working with the in house BI staff, graphic designer and project manager helped produce one of the best solutions I’ve seen to date. The implementation of BI technology such as Cognos into such an organisation now means there is no longer a need for IT reliant reports – the business community are now capable of extracting intuitive information at the click of a mouse, empowering them to act quickly and make a real change.” - ENDS – About Morgan Benjamin Morgan Benjamin is a new breed of independent consultancy providing specialist advisory, implementation and support services across Business Intelligence and enterprise data management.
