New 'Gold Standard' qualification will help demonstrate competence in safety, health and environment.
Safety, health and environmental examinations board NEBOSH, has today launched a brand new qualification for people working in the process industries.
The NEBOSH Award in Safety, Health and Environment for the Process Industries will help both employers and employees demonstrate competence in general health and safety, process safety and environmental management.
"Safety, health and environmental know-how is a must-have for anyone working in these major hazard industries," said NEBOSH Chief Executive Teresa Budworth. "Process operators, technicians and line supervisors must all be competent in these areas in order to ensure compliance."
The qualification was developed in conjunction with Cogent – the Sector Skills Council for the Process Industries - employers, the National Skills Academy for the Process Industries (NSAPI) and NEBOSH/NSAPI accredited providers.
“It is a key part of Cogent’s ‘Gold Standard’ which is a national framework for continuous professional development setting out the skills and qualifications required for world class performance in key roles in the process industries,” said James Murdock, Education and Qualifications Director, Cogent
He continued “The NEBOSH Safety, Health and Environment for the Process Industries qualification is an integral part of the Gold Standard framework, and is mapped against competencies defined by employers for health and safety.”
"This is important," added Teresa. "Employers gain reassurance when workforce skills are benchmarked against a national, industry-developed standard. And employees gain key knowledge as well as confidence from the achievement of a recognised qualification."
The NEBOSH Safety, Health and Environment for the Process Industries qualification is an introductory qualification and is made up of four units. The first unit covers Workplace Safety, looking at issues such as risk assessment and control; fire, electrical and transport safety; manual handling and hazardous substances.
The second unit looks more closely at Risk Assessment and includes a work based assessment. Unit 3 deals with Process Safety including common risks and controls; containment; plant integrity and emergency response. Unit 4 is concerned with Environmental Management and covers control of emissions and environmental risk assessments (impact assessment).
