This is a wicked and deplorable crime and we need the public to help us catch those responsible

Leading provider of commercial CCTV, AlertSystems, has commented on the recent news regarding two thieves who stole five red appeal boxes during a three-day spree.

Two thieves were caught on two separate commercial CCTV cameras attempting to steal poppy tins in the run up to Remembrance Day. The pair are reported to have stolen five red appeal boxes in total during their three-day spree. West Midlands Police released the available footage of the thieves who struck a tea room, a pharmacy and three shops within just a few hours last week.

The men first hit the Meriden Tea Rooms in Solihull, where they entered and pretended to wait to be seated. The tea room security footage shows one of them swipe the poppy tin on the counter and calmly place it under his jacket before walking out. They were then seen getting into a green car – possibly a Ford Focus – and driving away.

Around 2pm on the same day, a poppy tin was also stolen from Balsall Common Pharmacy after one of the men walked in and placed it in a plastic bag. They then attempted to steal an appeal tin from Blooms Garden Centre in nearby Hampton-in-Arden, but were unable as it was still chained to the counter. Just minutes later, the men were captured on CCTV entering the One Stop in Knowle. The pair attempted to steal the poppy tin by cutting the string, but were stopped by an eagle-eyed member of staff who caught them in the act.

The thieves continued their spree, frequenting a number of other businesses in the area. The CCTV footage is now being used as part of a public appeal for information. Inspector Allan Green, who is leading the investigations, said: “There are no circumstances under which such thefts are justifiable. This is a wicked and deplorable crime and we need the public to help us catch those responsible. From our CCTV inquiries, it appears one man usually removes the tin while the other acts as a distraction to anyone who may try and disturb him.”

As experts in end-to-end security solutions, those at AlertSystems take a keen interest in CCTV related news. A spokesperson from the company made the following statement: “Commercial security is a crucial tool for small businesses that are often targets of opportunistic theft.

“It is fortunate that two of the businesses in the West Midlands had CCTV security, proving the men were repeat offenders. However, when it comes to CCTV footage, the more comprehensive this is, the more likely it will be that you can identify the suspects. Relatively in-depth descriptions were ascertained from the footage provided. Nevertheless, if all five of the businesses targeted had high-quality CCTV, the investigation into these unscrupulous criminals may have reached a quicker conclusion.”
