AlertSystems Backs Upton Traders’ Call for More CCTV after Surge in Crime Thursday 20 November 2014 PDF Print Annette Keyworth, of Upton Business Association, believes the town is in need of more CCTV surveillance cameras to help tackle the problem of crime Leading provider of business security systems, AlertSystems, has echoed calls from traders for a greater police presence and improved CCTV coverage after a spate of recent thefts in the Malvern Hills district of Worcestershire. It follows a number of crimes against businesses in the town of Upton, with four separate reports of shoplifting and raids since Tuesday, October 28th. A clothing shop owned by an elderly couple was one of the retail outlets targeted in a morning raid, which is expected to cost them more than £3,000. Two masked thieves parked outside the premises in a blue Vauxhall Corsa, and forcibly gained entry by smashing the window. They left the car running while they loaded it with their haul, before speeding off. The Mayor of Upton, Peter Webb, is leading the call for police to intensify their patrols in the town, although the Malvern Hills Safer Neighbourhood Team has said Upton already has a high police presence and has sought to reassure people that the Malvern Hills district remains a very low crime area. Meanwhile, Annette Keyworth, of Upton Business Association, believes the town is in need of more CCTV surveillance cameras to help tackle the problem of crime and anti-social behaviour. As a leading independent provider of CCTV systems, AlertSystems has extended its sympathy to those traders in Upton affected by the recent thefts and has backed their calls for improved security measures. A spokesman for the company said: “We’re sorry to hear about the recent burglaries in Upton and the impact this will have had on the traders concerned. It goes without saying that we hope the perpetrators are brought to justice as quickly as possible, something that would have been easier if there was greater CCTV coverage in the town. “We’re fully behind the calls of Upton Business Association for more surveillance cameras, as their effectiveness at helping to combat crime and anti-social behaviour is proven. Not only are they a powerful deterrent, but they enable valuable footage of criminal activity to be captured that drastically improves the chances of offenders being identified and prosecuted,” he added.
