2014 Weld-Off winners in action

Market leading manufacturer Morris Site Machinery, supplier of ArcGen welder generators, is searching for promising young welders between the ages of 16 – 25 to enter The Great British Weld-Off 2015. In association with Speedy, the competition aims to discover and crown the UK’s top young welders.

Back for a second year, the competition will see four finalist teams battle it out in a series of competitive and creative challenges to showcase their skills and knowledge with a Q&A and safety round, a welding skills section, as well as a creative test where the teams will have to recreate a ‘World Famous Landmark’. The winning team will win £2,000 for their welding department or workplace, as well as £250 for each winning team contestant.

Phil Winnington, Managing Director at Morris Site Machinery said: “We’re thrilled to be bringing The Great British Weld-Off back for 2015. Earlier this year, we crowned an incredibly talented young team of welders from Coleg Cambria and we cannot wait to see what raw talent comes through this time.

“I would urge apprentices and students in the welding sector to consider this opportunity as part of their career development. The UK welding industry is getting busier and even more competitive and we are here to help young people get ahead and enhance their skills and knowledge.”

The teams will have to work together to impress the panel of high profile judges including Peter Haddock from Speedy, Chief Judge Ian Hogarth from The Welding Institute and Michael Scarrott from EAL.

Ian Hogarth from professional engineering establishment The Welding Institute said: “There is need in the UK to build confidence amongst young people to motivate them to start a career in traditional industries such as welding. The Great British Weld-Off does this. We are calling upon students either employed in industry or at college, and even employers and tutors, to get a team together and enter.”

The competition will be judged in two stages: a paper-based/online entry for the first round (closing date Thursday 8th January 2015), followed by the competitive live Weld-Off final on Wednesday 4th February 2015.

The champions will be announced at an awards ceremony on the evening of The Great British Weld-Off final at the Morris Site Machinery headquarters in Wolverhampton.
