South Korean Fishing Tragedy Reflects Importance of Wetsuits Tuesday 16 December 2014 PDF Print A tragic incident like this reinforces the dangers of being out at sea Wetsuit Centre, the UK’s leading provider of wetsuits, have responded to the fatal shipwreck off Russia’s Pacific coast which had 60 people on board. Twenty-seven fishermen have been confirmed dead with a growing death toll expect following a shipwreck at Bering Sea in the Pacific Ocean. Rescuers are searching for bodies following the incident on December 2 after the boat was “swamped by a wave”, according to the head rescue team in the Russian port of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. The South Korean government and the vessel operator, Sajo, stated that there were 35 Indonesians, 13 Filipinos, 11 South Koreans and a Russian on the Oryong-501. Authorities found four empty inflatable life-rafts near where the ship sank. Seven survivors have been found, but there are unlikely to be any other crew members rescued as nobody wore a wetsuit – a durable piece of equipment which increases the amount of time a person can hold out in choppy seas. Three Indonesians, three Filipinos, and the Russian inspector came away unscathed, but the outlook is bleak for the remaining crew members. A spokesperson for Wetsuit Centre, leading providers of a diverse range of wetsuits, responded to the tragic news.
