Clarizen Survey Finds Status Meetings “Bore-a-thons” ‘Frustrating” and “Waffley”

British workers can spend three to four hours and even all day on status meetings, with colleagues show-boating, poor chairmanship and irrelevant topics blamed for making them drag on.

LONDON, UK 16 December 2014 - Clarizen, the award-winning SaaS enterprise work collaboration software company, today announced the results of a YouGov survey revealing what GB workers think of status meetings.
The survey found that over a third (36%) of GB workers who attend status meetings think status meetings are a waste of time, with 20% of all GB workers saying they would rather watch paint dry or watch back-to-back TV Christmas soap specials than attend a status meeting.

The survey found that, among those who attend status meetings:-

- 36% of respondents think status meetings are a waste of time.
- Four out of 10 respondents multi-task during status meetings, checking email
and doing other work.
- 30% of respondents don’t think status meetings advance projects significantly.
- 57% of respondents say preparing for a status meeting takes longer than the
meeting itself.
- 69% of respondents say status meetings help them to stay organised at work.

Workers also consider phone calls and work emails as among the other big obstacles to completing their work efficiently, cited by 26% and 29% of respondents respectively.

“These results underline how much of the working day can be taken up with preparing for and attending status meetings, which then aren’t an effective use of people’s time,” said Avinoam Nowogrodski, founder and CEO of Clarizen. “Clarizen enables workers to spend less time in meetings and on email by creating the collaboration, accountability and visibility that is needed across an entire business.”
The survey also asked respondents to comment on the length of their longest status meeting and why it was so long. Ineffectual chairmanship, lack of preparation and show- boating were all given as reasons for long meetings. The survey found some meetings took all day, and three to four hour meetings were common.

In those three hours, which amount to a fifth of my working week, we could achieve everything mentioned AND work out how to commit the perfect murder and dispose of her body. Often a bore-a-thon is almost a verbatim repeat of the previous week's bore-a- thon.
- Nearly two hours. It was so long because one of my colleagues deliberately drags these meetings out... He then waffles about I don't know what I'm too busy thinking about what I'm going to have for dinner.
- One hundred years. The wall clock had stopped and nobody wanted to be the first to leave.
- Four hours... although the project was already well on its way to being completed, and the strategy was set in stone, some idiots thought they had a better way to reinvent the wheel... I cannot tell you how frustrating it was.
- Two hours. Someone went on about a previous business trip and included slideshow photos.

Survey Methodology

A status meeting is defined as a meeting for updates for team members on the completed and active work tasks, i.e. what has been accomplished and what still needs to be done. All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 2298 adults, of which 1,443 are workers. Fieldwork was undertaken between 8th -
9th December 2014. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+).
