the winter months are when Switzerland truly comes alive

The reaction comes following a report English language Swiss newspaper The Local detailing the opening of some of the continent’s most celebrated Christmas markets as the festive season comes around again.

The most famous market in the country is located in the Lake Geneva area in Montreux, a municipality in the canton of Vaud. Around 150 decorated chalets will be lit up along the waterfront, while the market itself will be spread over five separate sites to commemorate its twentieth anniversary.

Along with the more traditional market attractions such as decoration and craft stalls, regional food tasting and specialist gift boutiques, there will be wandering musicians, a children’s workshop and a number of fairground attractions. The size and success of the market reflects a region famous for its culture, most notably the Montreux Jazz Festival, one of the biggest of its kind in the world.

The Rochers de Naye, a 2,042 metre mountain that is only accessible via the district’s cog railway from central Montreux, is also going to stage some of the season’s greatest attractions. At its summit is an enchanted grotto dubbed Father Christmas’ home, as well as frequent appearances from reindeers throughout the month.

A spokesperson for Interdean, market leaders in international relocation, has released a statement following the report. They said: “While extremely beautiful throughout the summer, the winter months are when Switzerland truly comes alive.

“The Christmas markets on display throughout the entire country are great sources of wonderment and excitement for residents of all ages, and have proved themselves to be yet another reason why many choose Switzerland as their destination when it comes to moving abroad. The natural surroundings of lakes and mountains are the perfect setting for a traditional Christmas experience and truly have something for everyone.

“Through our experience in the expatriation industry, we are aware how important culture is to many people moving abroad. Switzerland’s Christmas markets is an example of the country’s appeal to prospective expats from all over the world.”
