Working at the Pinatubo volcano

These internships allow students to get up close and personal with science in a way that enthuses them

UK-based GeoTenerife, which coordinates internships and bespoke educational field trips to Tenerife, announces a new internship scheme that will offer just two students the chance to conduct research at the Taal and Pinatubo volcanoes in the Philippines in April 2015.

GeoTenerife works closely with the Canarian Institute of Volcanology (INVOLCAN), which monitors volcanic activity in the Philippines.

Speaking about the initiative, Sharon Backhouse, Director of GeoTenerife, said, “We’re delighted to be working with leading research organisation INVOLCAN, who share our passion for investing in tomorrow’s earth scientists.

“These internships allow students to get up close and personal with science in a way that enthuses them and gives them a unique insight into the natural sciences, whether it be volcanology, geology or geochemistry.

“We know that demand is very strong so potential participants are recommended to apply promptly. Last year, several students missed the deadline for applications and we simply can't accept any late submissions.

“The scientists at the Institute are brilliant, friendly and helpful, and make the internships an inspiring and formative experience for many students.”

Over the month, students will work closely with scientists from INVOLCAN, taking part in the installation of a permanent geochemical station for volcano monitoring at Taal volcano.

Students will be involved in the measurement of surface carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide efflux and the application of statistical analysis to the collected data.

They will also collect fumarole and soil gas samples for chemical and isotopic analysis and evaluate gas emissions using Gaussian simulations.

Dr Nemesio Perez, Coordinator of INVOLCAN, explains the rationale behind these internships:

“Following the success of our collaboration with GeoTenerife in 2014, offering internships in the Canary Islands, we received a number of requests for students wanting to travel further afield to work alongside our volcanologists.

"This year, we are offering very limited places to students wanting to do just that - the Philippines is one of our favourite destinations to travel to in our field, and we will be taking just two very lucky students with us in 2015!"

Throughout the internship, participants will be contributing to research papers of the highest standard.

For example, research conducted by six British internship students In August 2014 will be used (as well as their names accredited) in publications to be presented at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) in Vienna in April 2015.

The internship will cost £1,400 plus VAT, excluding flights. The trip runs from April 6 to April 26 and the deadline for applications is February 6 2015.
