Foreigners (including expatriates as well as tourists) are estimated to have accounted for around 70 per cent of the Louvre’s visitor count

The reaction comes following a report in the online publication The Local detailing news that the city’s world famous Louvre gallery and museum has achieved the position as the most popular in the world for the second year running.

After [who?] compiled all the figures from the past twelve months, it has been announced that over 9.3 million people visited the Louvre throughout 2014. Numbers keep improving for the museum, with over 100,000 more people visiting last year than in 2013, highlighting the enduring popularity of the attraction and the exhibits it houses.

Foreigners (including expatriates as well as tourists) are estimated to have accounted for around 70 per cent of the Louvre’s visitor count. Statistics show that the top 5 international nationalities were American, Chinese, Italians, British and Brazilians, highlighting the diversity of the venue’s intake.

Attractions such as Da Vinci’s ever-popular Mona Lisa and the newly-restored ‘Winged Victory of Samothrace’, a marble sculpture from Ancient Greece, have played a huge part in the constant flow of custom to the museum and indeed to Paris as a whole. As a further boost, over half of the visitors were under the age of 30, something that helps underline the Louvre’s integral position in European history and culture.

A spokesperson for Interdean, market leaders in international relocation services, has released a statement following the report. “The Louvre is one of the most important museums in the world and their increasing visitor numbers merely highlights this. Paris is a famous figurehead of European culture, and the figures released by the Louvre simply emphasise its ever-present influence and appeal for people from all over the world.

“In terms of vibrancy, Paris is certainly one of the most desirable cities in the world to live in and it is no surprise that here at Interdean we deal with a huge number of international relocations there every year.”
