this move will lower travel costs considerably

The French government have introduced significantly cheaper train prices for all passengers into the capital, with those from distant suburbs also included. This monthly pass is one of the least expensive throughout Europe, trumping London by quite some way.

Regular commuters to Paris were boosted by the government’s introduction of a monthly transport pass for everyone, replacing the Navigo pass which was more expensive depending on what zones you crossed when inside a train.

At the moment, a pass for Paris covering five zones equates to a monthly fee of €113, whereas this new plan costs €70 no matter how far commuters travel from October, when the scheme will be implemented. There will be a reported annual saving of €520 for commuters residing in the furthest outskirts from the French capital.

This compares favourably with most of European capitals, especially London and the United Kingdom. A monthly pass for zones one to five in London costs over three times the price of Paris’ new flat rate at €258 (£205). It is also cheaper than Berlin, with commuters paying €97 per month for three zones.

The French Socialist government believe these changes assist poorer commuters who do not live in Paris because of its high living costs. In a statement they said: “This revolution of a flat rate pass will help create regional unity, greener travel and boost competitiveness for companies in the Paris region. It will also be a formidable tool to help redistribute spending power.”

A spokesperson for Interdean, specialists in international relocation, welcomed the reduced monthly rates in Paris and beyond. They said: “Paris is a beautiful city and the government’s action in reducing train fares for workers is bound to be met with glee from several citizens. One small criticism of such a glamorous place is the cost of living, but this move will lower travel costs considerably.

“We are experts at moving people from the UK and other countries to areas such as Paris. With a host of activities and fairer travel prices, now is the time to relocate there and experience its wide range of benefits.”
