Before leaving, the offender also grabs the store’s landline and shoves it in his rucksack

Leading providers of CCTV security, AlertSystems, have commented on the recent news regarding an armed petrol-station robbery in West Sussex.

There is currently a manhunt underway to capture an armed thief who held up a petrol station using a five-inch knife and a piece of wood. The balaclava wearing criminal was recorded on CCTV confronting a terrified garage worker with a five-inch blade and wooden stick. The offender walked into Flower Bowl garage carrying the weapons and a rucksack and proceeded to order the shop employee to fill it with cash from the tills. Before leaving, the offender also grabs the store’s landline and shoves it in his rucksack whilst staring directly into the security camera.

Since the incident, Sussex Police have released the footage in a witness appeal. Detectives are specifically urging motorists who may have seen the thief or anyone who may know the individual’s identity or whereabouts, to come forward. Despite wearing a balaclava, there was a small part of the thief’s face on show. Fortunately, the CCTV camera caught high-definition footage of the individual and the police remain hopeful that someone will recognise the face from the footage. Detective Constable Paul Gilmour stated: “This was a terrifying incident for the victim, but thankfully he was not hurt. We are determined to find the robber.”

As experts in commercial security, AlertSystems take a keen interest in relevant industry news. “It is always unfortunate when businesses fall victim to armed robberies. If the criminals conceal their identity, it may feel like justice will never be served. However, with high-quality security measures in place, businesses will have the tools to support the police with their investigations and use the findings as part of a public appeal. Businesses without CCTV will often be left in a vulnerable situation when it comes to a police investigation and a criminal search. Those who invest in the correct measures will not only have a greater chance of justice, but will contribute to reducing and preventing crime in the local area by the same offenders in the future.”
