Employees in Education Argue For Importance of Creativity at Schools Monday 23 February 2015 PDF Print creative skills are as crucial as literacy and numeracy for pupils Graphics Direct, UK suppliers of artistic and graphics design equipment, respond to the debate around how important creativity is for pupils, compared with literacy and numeracy – two subjects which are set to be prioritised in Australia’s national curriculum. Debates about education are commonplace throughout the world and creative subjects will increase employment options for youngsters according to a professor at a leading Australian University. A report published by the Federal Government in October suggested that Australia should prioritise children becoming more literate and numerate during their early learning years. Schools in Sydney, as well as university staff, are concerned this will have a limited scale of success later down the line. Robyn Ewing, who is the Professor of Teacher Education and the Arts at the University of Sydney, firmly believes creative skills are as crucial as literacy and numeracy for pupils. She said: "I'm not saying they're not important but I am saying that creativity, problem solving and developing our imagination is just as important and it needs to happen alongside if we expect kids to solve the problems of the 21st century. "If they're not creative and they don't feel happy to take risks and have a go and fail with the idea that then they can go on to more, then they are not going to cope with the things that are going to be thrown at them." A spokesperson for Graphics Direct, a UK website which provides a range of creative equipment, agreed with Professor Ewing’s point of view. They said: “Although the report wants children to focus more on literate and numerate skills this does not guarantee an effective career plan and interests for youngsters. “Being creative is becoming more and more important as the rise in technology shows no signs of stopping. There are increasing numbers of jobs in the creative sector which is why we are conscious of selling excellent artistic equipment for all ages that can effectively be used at home or at school.” With over 20 years’ experience in the graphics industry, Graphics Direct is a leading online shop where you can find Graphics Equipment online. They are a leading UK provider of Studio Spraybooths, drawing boards, foam board, airbrush and drawing equipment and have recently become a Xyron Pro approved supplier.
